THOUGHTS OF THE DAY | We Both Proved

WE BOTH PROVED

14 years ago, a premature baby boy was born in University of Science Malaysia Hospital, Kubang Kerian Kelantan. A specialist was summoned to accept the baby due to complication delivery. He was finally diagnosed to have premature lungs and suffering of ‘yellow fever’. Fortunately, the baby was saved and subsequently transmitted to the ICU for 3 weeks. Once more, the group of surgeons and health practitioners have proven their expertise and professionalism worked.

5 years later, the boy indicated a lot of good signs. Unlike the history he has gone through during the delivery, he has proven to us that he is a healthy boy. We provided him with Soya milk as he has resisted breast feeding. He has taken a lot of vitamins. He ate a lot. At the same time, I seek for medical advice from the pediatricians. They claimed there is nothing to worry of. His lungs have matured. What is certain, he was found to be able to perform academically-well. I trained him myself.

He was able to read at the age of 3 years old. At 4 he has already mastered few computers games like Prince of Persia, Star Wars including various software application in the early 90s where most people were not fully aware of computer softwares, games and and their applications. At 6, he managed to complete his Quran or Khatam. He was very inquisive and talkative for the first 5 years of his age. All my friends adored him. They recognized his intelligence. He is very dedicated and committed to his work. Nevertheless, he sometimes found himself lonely. Having another child yet never crossed my mind until he was nearly 5 years of old.

2 years later, he went to school in Kluang, Johor. For 3 consecutive years at school, he took the first places in his classes. His teachers have realized his capabilities. Needless to say, for 3 years he has represented his school in all kinds of competitions at district level involving those of brain challenging skills.

He completed another 3 primary school years back in Gombak, Selangor. Despite shifting from one school to another, he was able to cope up with the new system and syllabus. Again, he has impressed his new teachers and friends once he took first in the list of the school top ten best students when he was 10 and 11 years old. He completed his primary school years by obtaining 5 As in UPSR examination.

He was offered to pursue his studies at few boarding schools. Like any other parents, both my husband and I have always been wishing that the boarding school environment is a safe place for him to study. He proved to us that he is good in academic. He obtained 7A1 in the PMR examination. Nevertheless, thinking that he has the history of lung premature, we kept our dreams for a moment of time. Again, undoubtedly, he has scored 9A1 1A2 in the school SPM trial examination last year.

This year he is 17 years old. The premature baby has grown taller to 6 feet tall. His looks resemble of his father. However, he has drawn some concern and enthusiasm from his teachers despite his lean body features. I am relieved after a female pediatrician confirmed that parental genetic has partially contributed to the children physical and emotional development.

Basically, my husband and I have learned a lot of things. We experienced things that are beyond our capabilities in raising a child like him. We discovered that science and mystic must be brought together. Parallel dimension thinking has influenced my belief. The 5 senses that we have learned in school are merely foundations of what is happening in our lives. Apparently, there are more senses need to be analyzed and upgraded as well. A 3-D thinking can be developed while using computer including games.

At 12 years old he was able to do complex programming for interactive multimedia that involved html, flash and Java and the result was he managed to develop his first very own website (at the age of 12) which matches the skills of a graduate in IT. When he was 9 years old, he has assisted me in making beautiful interactive multimedia presentations for my teaching classes. At 15 he has developed competencies involving complex desktop publishing and to quote one - by designing the cover of his school magazine. Later at the age of 16 he designed a banner (printed with a plotter) for his sport house. What I’ve narrated here are only a quarter of his real skills.

There are some parties who have recognized him and have generously offered their assistance after seeing the ‘prodigy’ at few international conferences. What we need is a place what we call a genuine smart and healthy school that can offer special children like him to learn further. Regretfully, despite being one of the smartest and highly potential student, he is not being given equal treatment by the teachers when it comes to health.

I would dare say that, our country has not fully reached the real expectations, although some signs have been shown in living examples like Sufiah, Amalina and Adi Putra. In my knowledge, real-life experience and expertise, the names aforesaid are from different categories of intelligence. They have not reached the real definition of smartness or better – a prodigy - having capable to master only one or two criterions which mainly focus on numbers and figures or having inclination towards mere memorization and not understanding the applications of such skills.

This prodigy child's blog I am proudly to proclaim can be visited at www.myspace.com/nickris_user1468
